What are words for?

Apparently, whatever the Supreme Court determines them to be:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the nationwide tax subsidies underpinning President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, rejecting a major challenge to the landmark law in a ruling that preserves health insurance for millions of Americans.

The justices said in a 6-3 ruling that the subsidies that 8.7 million people currently receive to make insurance affordable do not depend on where they live, as opponents contended.

In a legal opinion that surprised…well, no one, Chief Traitor Justice John Roberts opined that words don’t mean what they mean in the dictionary sense:

Chief Justice Roberts acknowledged that the plaintiffs had strong arguments about the plain meaning of the contested words. But he wrote that the words must be understood as part of a larger statutory plan.“In this instance,” he wrote, “the context and structure of the act compel us to depart from what would otherwise be the most natural reading of the pertinent statutory phrase.”

This was challenging, he said, in light of the law’s “more than a few examples of inartful drafting,” a consequence of rushed work behind closed doors that “does not reflect the type of care and deliberation that one might expect of such significant legislation.”

But he said the law’s interlocking parts supported a ruling in favor of the subsidies, particularly given that a contrary decision could have given rise to chaos in the insurance markets.

“The statutory scheme compels us to reject petitioners’ interpretation,” Chief Justice Roberts wrote, referring to the challengers, “because it would destabilize the individual insurance market in any state with a federal exchange…”

Did you catch that?  The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court stated that the law as written does not allow subsidies for people in states that did not set up their own exchanges, but that disallowing the subsidies would be bad.  And because of that, the law doesn’t mean what it plainly states that it means.

This ruling is proof that there is no more law in the United States!  The law is what unelected judges declare it to be!

The Communists have won.  The United States is dead.

Therefore the law is ignored And justice is never upheld. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore justice comes out perverted.” — Habakkuk 1:4
